Has King Diamond dabbled in the Occult and witchcraft so much that he has managed to call on the dark powers to reincarnate himself into a younger, stronger version of himself and form a new band based in Germany even before he has even died? Well it seems this might very well be the case in the form of vocalist Meister Cagliostro of Attic.

Attic’s debut album, The Invocation, is an album that King Diamond could listen to, think he himself had written and then also performed on. The songs presented here are filled with horror/occult inspired lyrics, a singer that sounds as every bit as strong or stronger than King Diamond, has well written songs and excellent guitar work.

Artist: Attic
Album: The Invocation
Genre: Traditional Heavy Metal
Label: Ván Records
Release: December 7, 2012

I will be the first to admit I never was a very big fan of Mercyful Fate or King Diamond. I was always attracted to the theme of the bands work and the great guitar work but it was the vocals, especially the ultra high pitch vocals, of King Diamond that always turned me off. They never felt they fit in with the song or they just took me completely out of the mood that the song was striving for. So with Attic I am actually surprised at myself that I enjoyed their debut so much. Though Cagliostro’s vocals do hit the glass breaking levels that King Diamond does, they somehow seem to fit in better with the songs presented here, along with when he sings in a lower key. Does this make me a hypocrite? I’m not sure. I have tried many times over the years to go back and listen to King Diamond and Mercyful Fate but just could not get into them. Attic on the other hand, I found myself listening to multiple times, and though there are still times the high pitch vocals didn’t sit well with me I still enjoyed what I heard here.

I think one of my favorite tracks on The Invocation is ‘Satan’s Bride’ where Cagliostro’s vocals hit all spectrums and really showcase his abilities. The other tunes, ‘Funeral in the Woods’, ‘Join the Coven’ and ‘Ghost of the Orphanage’ all are strong tunes and boast the occult/ black magic themes fans of both Mercyful Fate and King Diamond should instantly take to.

As for the music itself you will find The Invocation offers a classic Heavy Metal style that is straightforward, boasts talented guitar work, with an accessible sound, and catchy melodies/leads. All packaged nicely together to make a nice metal record for all fans of the genre.

The reigning kings of technical, historically-themed brutality, NILE, will tour the United States once again this March and April with 28 shows supported by three of the best local bands in every market. NILE will play two massive sets with music spanning their prolific, twenty year career.

“In order to commemorate our 20th year as a band,” states guitarist/vocalist Karl Sanders, “we want to bring NILE and all metal fans an evening of NILE music that spans our entire career and play two full sets with only a brief intermission. After years of many package tours, the necessary set time restrictions have often meant that NILE’s had to streamline our set. Fans didn’t always get to hear the songs they came to hear. Thankfully, some of those classic NILE songs we have been itching to play for years will now get a chance to be heard live. We are extremely fired up.”

“Another facet of this tour which was very important to us,” continues Sanders, “we have asked promoters to include the best three local bands from their respective areas on the bill. Supporting local bands in each city is a way for us to give something back to younger bands and the metal scene. We’ve asked promoters to keep ticket prices low, so that fans of all ages can come and join us for an evening of metal. In these difficult times of our recessionary economy, an evening of killer metal shouldn’t have to break the bank. NILE are going to do our part: biting the bullet and rolling the dice to bring metal fans in the USA an unforgettable evening with NILE for a reasonable ticket price. We are sincerely looking forward to seeing all our friends and fans at the shows in 2013!”

Keep in mind fellow metal heads, I am not keen on live albums. I feel that live is a title that should be enjoyed physically in the pit, or in bowels of the venue, listening and observing the masters of music at work. So when I woke up today to see Arkona had a live album, I had a bit of skepticism. Generally live albums have few songs, mostly newer fare, and with mediocre sound quality.

Band: Arkona
Album: Decade of Glory
Genre: Folk/Pagan Metal
Label: Napalm Records
Release: February 22nd, 2013

Well this album was the exact opposite of anything else. Decade of Glory, is IMMENSE with 31 live songs spanning the entire career of Arkona. You have classics such as ”Slav’sja, Rus’” and live favorites such as “Yarilo” and “Goi Rode Goi”. The impressive part, however, is the sound itself. Not only are the sounds crisp and near studio quality, but very seldom can you hear the wonderful live vocals in harmony with the crowd singing the hooks to the catchy bounce of ”Stenka na Stenku” and many other songs.

There isn’t much to else to say besides that this is a compilation of some of Arkona’s best works intertwined with the energy they bring live. This is the only live album I have heard that can bring some of that tangible energy of the live event into the ears of headphones walking between classes. If you love folk, if you love Arkona, if you love vodka, you will love this album, and you will mark your calendar for when these Russian pagans storm your city next.

Coheed and Cambria isn’t what you would call your average heavy metal band. In fact, it would be wrong to label them as metal to begin with. So why review them on a metal website? Well, bear with me here. Coheed is a very unique group that blends together a multitude of genres, namely progressive rock, punk, indie, and yes, metal. For this reason, the band has an extremely diverse fanbase; consisting of metalheads, emos, hipsters, classic rock fans, you name it. The music of the band chronicles the Amory Wars, an epic comic book series written by frontman Claudio Sanchez. Their latest release, The Afterman: Descension is part II of a double album, a direct sequel to The Afterman: Ascension released back in October, both of which continue the story of the Amory Wars and follow the events revolving around the character Sirius Amory, founder of the Keywork and the seven suns of Heaven’s Fence.

Band: Coheed and Cambria
Album: The Afterman: Descension
Genre: Alt. Metal/Prog Rock
Label: Hundred Handed
Release Date: 2/5/13

The album starts off with some atmospheric acoustic guitar playing that leads into the energetic “Key Entity V: Sentry the Defiant,” which I’ve been excited to hear ever since Claudio released an acoustic version on YouTube a year back. I must say, it didn’t disappoint one bit and it was most impressive to see the end result in studio form. The added distortion and lead guitar parts do it magnificent justice and it makes a compelling case as the strongest track on the album. The entire first half of the album is actually incredibly solid, with the band sounding creative as ever in parts. There is no doubt regarding the ambition of this album; it certainly covers a lot of ground musically. Coheed has always shown great versatility in their music; a trait that is on full display in “Number City” which is a cool, groovy little song that incorporates funk and jazz elements. The following track “Gravity’s Union” is surprisingly epic, and fans will be singing along and crowd surfing to this one for sure. Upon its conclusion, I was convinced that I was halfway through what was easily the best Coheed and Cambria album since Good Apollo Vol. 1.

Unfortunately though, it turned out that I had already reached the climax; from here on out the album pretty much goes downhill. While I genuinely like how the songs flow together very nicely, the end result is consequently rather generic. The sixth track “Away We Go” reverts to their softer format and is a good song in itself. But then we’re treated to an additional two consecutive songs in the same mold, so much that they really don’t stand out at all. Coheed, I love you guys to death but I’ll never understand why on earth you picked “Dark Side of Me,” as your performance on live television.

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_Ls7RQBq_E]

“2’s My Favorite 1″ offers a degree of redemption upon conclusion of “Descension.” It’s not exactly a highlight track but it gets the band back on its feet for their exit, and the ending outro section does an effective job at bringing the two-part album full circle. Overall, the album is an ambitious achievement by a truly excellent and remarkably consistent band who are every bit deserving of the praise lavished upon them. These guys are not only phenomenal songwriters, but the chemistry between them is undeniable and is a big factor of what makes Coheed and Cambria the definition of expertise and professionalism in rock music today. Not many bands can make two-part albums on this scale anymore, which just goes to show the hell of a band Coheed is. While “The Afterman: Descension” may be the weaker album of the two, it will still receive a welcome reception from fans and critics alike and effectively concludes part II of a fantastic double album in satisfying fashion.

Anticipation for Honor Found In Decay, the tenth studio album by NEUROSIS, is starting to intensify, as we count down the days until its North American release date on October 30th. Like an eclipse, a brand new NEUROSISalbum is not a frequent occurrence and when it comes around, every last moment must be savored. For this momentous event, all the forces are aligned.

NEUROSIS forged the songs on Honor Found In Decay with the revered Steve Albini, marking their fifth collaboration with the engineer in their longstanding relationship. Their monolithic sound captured at Electrical Audio studios, Chicago, the seven tracks were then mastered by John Golden at Golden Mastering in Ventura, California.

Aesthetics have always been paramount for NEUROSIS and with Honor Found In Decay, Steve Von Till, Scott Kelly, Noah Landis, Jason Roeder and Dave Edwardson’s musical vision is brilliantly evoked by NEUROSIS‘ visual guru Josh Graham. And with that, we proudly unveil the cover art and track listing for this prodigious album, which is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases in the band’s extensive history.

Wintersun has finally unveiled new details about their long awaiting album, Time. At this point it might be more appropriate to say ALBUMS since the band has decided to split Time into two releases. Here is the official statement posted by the band on their Facebook page

Unofficial Album Artwork. Seems Legit

Hello friends!

Time for some album(s) news. Wintersun‘s Time is going to be two albums, titled TIME I & TIME II. We made this decision simply because of few reasons:

- All the 80min of material won’t fit on a regular CD and we didn’t want to cut anything out.

- We want you to be able to hear new material sooner and not wait any longer and we want to go on tour sooner.

- The music is very full and complex, so listening this kind of “hard listening (not easy listening)” material straight for 80 minutes is a bit too much (even for me). Both albums will be approx. nice 40 min epic packages of fireworks.

- We like the idea of releasing two albums within one year, so the band will stay more visible longer, which is important in these “modern times.” No more years of silence for us!

We hope you’lll approve our new little “plan” and support us when the “Time” comes!

The track listing for TIME I looks like this:

TIME I

1. When Time Fades Away

2. Sons of Winter and Stars

I Rain of Stars

II Surrounded by Darkness

III Journey Inside a Dream

IV Sons of Winter and Stars

3. Land of Snow and Sorrow

4. Darkness and Frost

5. Time

TIME I mix is set to be finished by July, mastered in the beginning of July and released in early fall of 2012! TIME II will be released in 2013. Conception of album artworks, videos, live shows incl. rehearsals will keep us busy during the summer and I’ll also continue mixing TIME II meanwhile. We’ll be hopefully posting some videos and teasers during summer. Also some new live show announcements soon, so stay tuned for those!

We can’t wait for you guys to hear TIME I material and play it to you live! Have a great summer!

- Jari & Wintersun boys

WINTERSUN are confirmed to headline this year’s edition of the so-called HEIDENFEST tour kicking off in October supported by Korpiklaani, Varg, Trollfest and Krampus, before they go on touring the world. Further infos, dates and tickets on www.heidenfest.eu
