Wall of The Eyeless Demo Review

When thinking of Doom Metal, usually visions of slow, droning guitar riffs for six or so minutes is what often comes to mind. On a few occasions, the formula of the genre gets spiced up with little hints of other metal genres. Wall of The Eyeless however, takes it to a whole new level. Think of the instrumentation of Children of Bodom, acoustics, vocals of  Death Metal, all mixed in with the emotion and atmosphere of Doom Metal. Sounds quite unique and very appealing, doesn’t it? Well you better believe it! Their demo is a small glance of what they are capable of.

Band: Wall of The Eyeless
Album: Self Demo
Genre: Doom/ Melodic Death Metal
Label: Unsigned
Released: December 31, 2011

I find it so amazing that this band is still under the radar! The fusion of many metal elements, all performed by two members. SL on guitar, bass, and vocals, with Simon on drums, this two piece has the power equivalent to a standard 5 piece Death Metal outfit. But what makes them stand out more so than any other Death Metal band, is the use of acoustics, and progressive elements. The track, Do We Belong Here?, has an in depth look into that style. Starting off with an acoustic guitar, it hints to a Dream Theater-like sound, captivating you every second. Not too long into the song, does the style change to a much heavier sound. Though not speedy like most death metal, it still provides a hard hitting sound, yet still staying with the progressive format. The use of clean vocals blends in nicely, a style that is also rarely seen
in the extreme metal world. And what’s a Death Metal song, without an epic guitar solo? This track just has it all in a nice 5 minute package!

This demo also has a great epic at the end of it, entitled Rain Song. This track is 8+ minutes, and is worth the length! Following similar to Do We Belong Here?, this track however uses more acoustics, and blends it with distorted guitar. The acoustic guitar is used more of a backing sound, similar to the use of keyboards in many metal bands, rather than the primary source. The track over time turns into a dark, black metal-like song. As quickly as it changes into that, it flip-flops back into a more progressive tune, and switches back over. This track leaves you guessing what’s next, and before you know it, you’ve just listened to one of the most outstanding songs from rising musicians!

Wall of The Eyeless provides an interesting take on the Doom/ Death Metal genre, and transforms it to something much different from most metal genres. Having a range from Prog to Extreme metal, it is clear that both musicians have a deep understanding and appreciation for the music they deeply enjoy. The band has a lot of potential to become great, and I feel they are on the rise to do so. In the next  5 years, I would not be surprised to starting to see them appear on well known European Festivals, and eventually traveling overseas.
