Let The Witches In! A Review of Spell Eater

From our recent discovery and work with them, there is one new band that everyone should know: HUNTRESS! This is a heavy metal outfit from Southern California, with a howling focus around Wiccan practices. They were one of the main four bands on the Paganfest America Part III line-up, and they received the honor of opening for legendary British power metal band, Dragonforce.  The band is set to release their first album, Spell Eater, on May 8th.

Band: Huntress
Album: Spell Eater
Genre: Heavy Metal
Label: Napalm Records
Release Date: May 8, 2012 (USA)

The album first starts of with the self-titled track, “Spell Eater”. The song opens up with some fast guitar riffs, and goes into some epic blast beats.  After the intro. Jill Janus, the frontman of the group, starts singing. One thing that is very noticeable with her vocals, is the range of pitch. She can easily go from a low thrash-like vocals, to high-octave singing in a matter of seconds. She can also perform some brutal death growls. This song quickly shows you how talented her vocals are, as well as the how skilled the band is. They are all masters of their instruments.

One of my personal favorites is the track “Eight of Swords”. This song was released as an EP and featured a music video to test the waters, which proved to promote the band quite virally. The EP received  positive feedback and brought the band some interest before they embarked on Paganfest.  This song once again shows Jill’s range in vocals, and shows a very technical side of the band. At one point, Blake Meahl and Ian Alden do a dual guitar solo. This is one of the best moments in this song, and sounds so dead on live. It takes some hard practice and precision to have a dual solo sound that clean. “Eight of Swords” is one of those songs that fans will keep going back to over and over again.

The album ends with the track “The Tower,” which is definitely bittersweet.  Once this song is over you immediately wish that there were more tracks on this already substantial album. Every song is perfect and amazing in it’s own way. “The Tower” show some technical, brutal guitar work, and some complex beats from Carl Weirzbicky on the drums.  The main chorus will have fans all over each venue singing along to it, as they are captivated by the amazing sounds from this track.

This album is one of the best albums to be released this year. Each and every song is unique, and sounds very distinct from each other. There honestly is no track that fans will skip over, it’s that perfect. From “Aradia” to “Terror”, all these tracks are great! And Huntress offers the brutality everyone wants to hear in a metal band, as well as great musicianship. And these guys offer a great performance live! At Paganfest, most people heard of Huntress, but didn’t know too much about them. Within seconds, the whole venue was headbanging and moshing. If a band can do that as their first major appearance, then that’s one hell of a band!

Pre-order Spell Eater, and take a look at our exclusive interview with Jill Janus from the band! And don’t forget to grab a ticket and check these guys out live, and stop by their merch stand! They are all great to hang out with, and would love to see all of their fans! Like their Facebook page as well!
